We perceive the world around us through our senses, and these observations become cognitive knowledge once they are processed and analysed against our existing knowledge base. Recent psychology research shows that there is a very fuzzy area between perception and cognition, and that there is room for bias causing misinterpretation at every step. This bias can arise from direct previous experience, or indirectly through cultural norms or social affiliations. The challenge for those working in the data visualisation arena is to ensure that the message conveyed by the datavis image is first, an accurate representation of the data, and second, clear and unambiguous to anyone who sees it.
This interactive workshop will summarise these concepts and show examples of data visualisations that are very easy to interpret, others that are very easy to misinterpret, and provide some ideas as to what makes them so. Due to time availability, we will concentrate on static images that have been produced from numerical or text data, rather than interactive graphics or film footage. Guidelines for creating responsible data visualisations that accurately match the data and convey a clear, unequivocal message will be shared.

With a background in science, Sawsan lived in the US for many years where she lead initiatives for girls and women in tech, won a leadership award for instigating a data science and visualisation culture change at her organisation, and is featured in the Super Cool Scientists Colouring Book (MacSorely, 2017)!
Now based in Devon, Sawsan runs Collaborative Capacities, a business services company that provides facilitation and mentoring of cross-sector conversations and collaborations for innovation. Locally, she is an Innovation Specialist Mentor at the University of Exeter’s Impact Lab, and a resident at Kaleider, Exeter.
